Wanted to throw up a quick update from the weekend. Sorry for the lack of updates on here, but things have been crazy since the announcement of the X Games. That’s right! I will be racing at the X Games on June 4th in Austin, TX. I am very excited about this opportunity to showcase my talents and the sport of Flat Track to the world. The best part for all my family, friends and fans is that you will be able to catch it LIVE on ESPN. I know almost everyone has access to that channel so no excuse for missing it!
I haven’t raced since Florida about a month ago so I wanted to make sure I still knew how to ride my motorcycle and competed at the Gratz 1/2 Mile on Saturday afternoon. There was a lot of good competition there. Almost thirty riders in both Expert classes. The track was very hard packed and slick which made it technical. I won both my heat races and felt good heading into the main events. They watered the track before the first main event. I qualified on pole and grabbed the early lead but struggled finding a line that worked for me and got passed a couple laps into the race. I adjusted my line, but I didn’t have enough time or speed to take back the lead and I finished 2nd. The second main event got canceled due to darkness which was a bummer, but overall I felt like I rode well. There are a few things I could have done different, but it was a solid day.
We got home really late Saturday night and I had to wake up at 5:30am on Sunday to compete at my first Duathlon of the season. I know, I am crazy. The course was 1.5 mile run, 16 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run. The first leg of my run, I averaged a little under 6 minutes per mile which I was pleased with. My lower back hurt a little bit on the bicycle, probably from racing a cushion half mile the day before, but I still managed to average over 20mph dealing with some hills and wind. I built up a big lead and was able to cruise during the last run averaging about 6:35-6:40 per mile. I crossed the finish line winning my age group and the overall by over six minutes which was awesome. I wish I could have done better on the bicycle but I was pleased with my result. I even made some cash. I basically got paid to train yesterday. Hey, I can get used to this!
It was a busy weekend. It’s Monday afternoon as I type this and I just got back from a sports massage which was amazing. I believe strongly in active recovery so after my fat ass eats some lunch, I am going to go on a bicycle ride. Haha! Hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather and see you at the race track soon.
